The Law of the To-Do List

Every morning with my coffee, I pull out my notebook and make a to-do list for the day. I have gone through probably hundreds of notebooks over the years. I can’t quite recall when this started, but it’s been a many years (ok, into the decades I think). There are standard things on here that I have to do every day, but there is some strange satisfaction in listing out the easy things to scratch off the list.

Of course, there are rules. For example, no one else is allowed to add to my list. Big no no. My list must be on paper. I’ve tried the digital route, iPad, iPhone, etc. No dice. There is nothing gratifying about clicking that I have completed a task. This definitively must be done with a pen on paper. Otherwise, it’s just not going to happen.

I must also complete the crappy tasks first. I also don’t follow my own rules well, so I’m terrible at this, but I do try. Most 5 minute tasks that suck are shockingly easy to do, but I will often avoid them at all costs.

Is this just me? Does the to-do list rule your day? Does anyone use a notebook anymore or do most people just keep track of tasks on their phone or some handy app to remind them?
